Exploring a wine culture so ancient, passed down by generations, an inseparable part of the cultural identity is the Georgian experience.
  • Visit the Ikalto Qvevri Making School and Cultural Centre dedicated to preserving the ancient craft of producing qvevri – a unique traditional earthenware vessel used for making, ageing and storing wine.
  • Wine Tasting – At Alaverdi Monastery, Napreuli’s Twin Wine Cellar (family owned traditional), Gvirabi Tunnel Cellar (industrial), Chateaux Mukhrani (industrial/traditional) and Iago’s Boutique Winery (traditional/organic)
  • Visit the first brandy factory in Georgia which used classical technologies founded in 1884, by David Sarajishvili.
  • Georgian Cuisine – Masterclasses on delicacies like Khinkali, Churchkhela and Khachapuri etc.
  • Enjoy Supras (traditional Georgian feasts) hosted by a Tamada (Georgian toast master), along with folk dances and songs.
  • Interact with locals and share a meal at their table

Arrival in Tbilisi [-/-/D]

  • 1630hrs: On arrival at Tbilisi airport, you will be received by an English speaking guide and later transferred to the hotel.
  • 1800hrs: Enjoy light local snacks along with a brief introduction to Georgia.
  • 1900hrs: Transfer for dinner at the Funicular Restaurant

Funicular Restaurant Complex is located at the top of Mtatsminda Mountain (800m) and is accessed by Tbilisi Funicular, which takes 5mins to reach to the top; from the train you can enjoy some spectacular panoramic views of Tbilisi. Enjoy dinner here - Georgian food.

  • Return to the hotel. Overnight stay in Tbilisi @ N12 Boutique hotel or similar.

Tbilisi to Kakheti (approx. 2hrs) [B/L/D]

  • 0730hrs: Early breakfast at the hotel.
  • 0900hrs: Check out and transfer to Kakheti through Gombori Pass

Start the journey towards the cradle of wine via the picturesque Gombori Pass (1620 m). Bask in the beauty of ancient forests, the Alazani valley and Caucasus Mountains. Take pictures of the idyllic villages, green meadows and sheep grazing below a clear blue sky.

Enroute enjoy a refreshing coffee/tea/snack break at Chateau Mere located at the base of awe-inspiring Gombori mountain range.

  • Around 1100hrs: Visit to Ikalto Qvevri Making School (If the school is closed we will visit the 6th Century Ikalto Monastery.)

The best wines tend not to be found in the open, but buried underground waiting to be unearthed. The Ikalto Qvevri Making School and cultural centre is dedicated to preserving the ancient craft of producing qvevri – a unique traditional earthenware vessel used for making, ageing and storing the wine. Handed down over generations, Georgia’s qvevri winemaking method involves pouring crushed grapes with their juice, stalks and pips into the hand-made clay vessels, which are then sealed and buried in the earth for fermentation and ageing to take place. As there is little, if any, chemical or technological intervention, this method has gained a strong following by natural wine producers.

  • 1230hrs: Visit the Alaverdi Monastery Wine Cellar

The Alaverdi Monastery Wine Cellar is Located at the foot of the greatest Caucasus Mountain, on the west bank of Alazani River in Kakheti. Archeologists discovered remains of a VIII-X Century old wine cellar containing different sized qvevris, in the Alaverdi Monastery yard – making it the oldest site of wine culture. You will be able to see how monks still make their wine here

  • 1330hrs: Light lunch at the Alaverdi Monastery at the Tourist’s dine-hall, Matsvnis Sakhli. All the food served here is by the monastery’s own production.
  • Visit Gremi Historical Complex

The famous royal trading center during medieval times. Today, the Royal tower is a museum at the complex.

  • 1430hrs: Visit Napareuli’s Twins Wine Cellar

This was established by twin brothers Gia and Gela Gamtkitsulashvili. The company is oriented on the Kakhetian method of wine production and follows the family’s tradition of wine making. ‘Kakhetian’ is a stylistic adjective across Georgia, meaning a wine of exceptional weight and tannin.

You will be able to observe and participate in the Georgian Cuisine Masterclass of baking bread and making Churchkhela – which is a delicious Georgian candy.

Later, transfer to the hotel. Check in and relax.

Kakheti to Tbilisi [B/L/-]

  • 0800hrs: Breakfast at the hotel.
  • 0900hrs: Visit the Gvirabi Tunnel Wine Cellar

The Gvirabi Tunnel Wine Cellar is Georgia’s largest wine cellar – 7.7 km of tunnels, orginally built for military purposes during the Cold War, the tunnels (gvirabi) were purchased by Winery Khareba. This is an industrial winery, where you will have a wine tour and demonstration, like no other.

  • 1200hrs: Enjoy traditional lunch along which the much-awaited Georgian Supra and Folk Songs

Enjoy a lunch with a Georgian family in the countryside with the traditional Supra and wine-toasts, indulge in a masterclass of roasting traditional Georgian Barbeque and ofcourse, lots of wine!

  • 0230hrs: Continue driving to the historic town of Sighnaghi, Visit the Convent of Bodbe and Sighnaghi Fortress Wall

The architecture and landscape makes Sighnaghi, one of the most beautiful small towns in Georgia. The Convent of Bodbe, a pilgrimadge site, is the final resting place of St. Nino, who converted Georgians to Christianity, in the 4th Century. More than 15 nuns (religious sisters) still live and practice their faith here. The 5 km long Sighnaghi Fortress Wall, along with its 23 towers, is a historic Georgian monument. Later, take a relaxing walk on the cobble stone pavement through the old streets of this fortress town; buy some carpets or hats and take-in the view of the surrounding Caucasian mountain.

  • 1730hrs: Drive back to Tbilisi. En route indulge in the tasting of the traditional bread and salty cheese

On arrival, check-in and freshen up.

  • 1900hrs: This evening is free. Black Swan Journeys suggests a leisurely walk around the Old Tbilisi Meidani Square. Enjoy an authentic Georgian dinner on the river and explore the nightlife. You will be spoilt for choice and we will be happy to give you our recommendations.

Tbilisi to Stepanstminda (approx. 3.5hrs) [B/L/D]

 

  • 0730hrs: Early breakfast at the hotel.
  • 0830hrs: Drive to the famous Caucasian mountains, visit Jvari Monastery (UNESCO WHS) in Mtskheta, Jhinvali Water Reservoir, visit Ananuri fortress and a small souvenir outdoor bazaar run by locals. A brief stop at Gudauri for a breath-taking view will be followed by a drive down to Matskheta – the old capital of Georgia. Explore the 6th century Jvari, a Georgian Orthodox Monastery near Matshketa. Explore the Ananuri castle, built on the right bank of Aragvi River in the village of Ananuri which is part of the Great Silk Road. Today, the road is called the Georgian Military Highway.
  • 1230hrs: Enjoy lunch with a local family and learn to make the traditional Georgian Khinkali (dumpling).

  • 1400hrs: Post lunch, rest a little and take an off-road drive up to the top of the mountain, visit the famous Gregeti Trinity Church (2200m) at the feet of Mount Kazbegi (5047m) *This will be a high altitude excursion.

Mount Kazbek is one of the mountains of the Caucasus and the third highest mountain in Georgia. Learn of how Mount Kazbek is associated in Georgian folklore with Amirani, the Georgian version of Prometheus. Visit the Gergeti Trinity Church, which is now called the Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church.

  • 1700hrs: Drive down from the mountain and spend a free evening downtown OR if there is time and weather permits, drive 15 km North to visit the official border between the Russian federation and Georgia.
  • 1900hrs: Dinner in Stepanstminda with a local family.

Stepanstminda to Tbilisi [B/L/-]

    • 0800hrs: Check out and transfer to Tbilisi, en route visit the Château Mukhrani Winery

    The Château Mukhrani Winery was founded in 1878 by the Prince of Mukhrani, heir to the royal family of Georgia. Archeological excavations in this region have found traces of the presence of winemaking going back as far as the Stone Age. Get fascinating insights into the traditions and secrets of Georgian wine-making. Wander into the magnificent castle and surrounding gardens which were a cultural centre for the Georgian elite. The historic underground cellers store 60,000 barrels of wine. The Mukhrani vineyards with its exquisite soil have earned Chateau Mukhrani world recognition.

It was founded 1878 by the Prince of Mukhrani, heir of the royal family of Georgia. Get a fascinating insight into the traditions and secrets of Georgian wine-making, fabulous castle and cellars, wonderful gardens and vineyards which have earned Chateau Mukhrani world recognition.

  • 1230hrs: Continue driving to another family winery – Iago’s Boutique Winery in Chardakhi.

Situated in the small village of Chardakhi, approximately 10 km from Mtskheta, Iago's Wine is a small boutique winery producing qvevri wines using grapes from Iago’s organic vineyards. Iago's wife Nino is the only woman in Georgia, who has crafted her own wine named Mandili and manages the entire process of wine production.

  • 1330hrs: Lunch at Iago’s Winery – Participate in the Georgian Khachapuri baking process at the family winery, tour of the winery followed by a delicious lunch and wine tasting.

  • 1600hrs: Later continue to Tbilisi – en route stop in Mtshketa and visit the Svetiiskhoveli Cathedral

One of the most sacred places in all of Georgia, the Cathedral of Svetitskhoveli (1010-1029) contains the grave of Sidonia, who was said to have been buried holding Christ's robe. Take a stroll down the old streets of the town and shop at the small street side souvenir bazaar.

  • 1830hrs: Continue to Tbilisi. Check-in and relax.
  • 2000hrs: Transfer to Median Square or to the shopping mall East Point (Optional)
  • Overnight in Tbilisi @ N12 Boutique hotel or similar.

  • 0800hrs: Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Morning Activities – (Optional) Visit Aghmashenebeli Avenue for its Flea Market OR experience Sulphur Baths. (If you want to visit the baths kindly confirm it with us within 2 days of arrival in Tbilisi, since this will have to be paid locally)

Lunch at a local Georgian restaurant in Tbilisi town.

  • 1400hrs: Visit Sarajishvili Brandy Factory and then return to the stay.

This is the first brandy producing factory in Georgia which used the classical technologies founded in 1884 (throughout the Russian Empire) by David Sarajishvili. The factory has its own famous shop where guests can buy local brandy.

  • 1900hrs: Enjoy a special Farewell Supra (a traditional feast) at a Georgian restaurant hosted by a Tamada (Georgian toast master), along with folk dances and songs.
  • Overnight in Tbilisi @ N12 Boutique hotel or similar.

  • 0800hrs: Breakfast at the hotel.
  • 0830hrs: Check-out (luggage can be stored at the hotel) and head out for Old Tbilisi Walking Tour

Visit Metekhi Church, Peace Bridge, Erekle Street, Sharden District, take a cable car ride for visiting Narikala fortress, continue the tour to Rustaveli Avn and St Trinity Cathedral, drive to the Mtatminda theme panoramic park.

  • 1200hrs: Lunch at local restaurant on your own or enjoy street food in Tbilisi, this will be your last meal in Georgia and we will be happy to help with recommendations.
  • 1330hrs: Transfer to the airport for your flight departure
  • 1710hrs: Board departure flight
